About the Department

The Department of Chinese Language and Literature was founded when Shue Yan College was first established. For four decades, it has shared the University’s mission to promote traditional Chinese culture and moral values. To offer students the opportunity to broaden their horizons, the department has secured overseas exchange programmes with 45 institutions in 19 regions around the world. Regular activities and events such as seminars and gatherings are often organized to foster closer ties amongst students. Recently the Department is offering:
1. Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Chinese Language and Literature Programme
2. Master of Philosophy in Chinese Programme
3. Doctor of Philosophy in Chinese Programme

Programme Features

The programme is an integration of research and creation. Students will have opportunities to practise various types of writing, and they will have a high level of writing skills after graduation. They will also learn a wide scope of knowledge in Chinese Literature, Chinese Language and Chinese Literary Criticism.

Internship Opportunity

Work Placement is an elective course for Year 3 students in this programme. The duration is 8-12 weeks (2 days per week). Number of working hours is 100-150. Students will be co-supervised by an university academic staff and a workplace supervisor.

Career Prospects

Our graduates can teach subjects like Chinese or Chinese Literature, they can also perform cultural, literary and artistic works. Some of them work as editors / reporters for newspapers, magazines or textbooks, or in cultural sector. They can also work in government or private organisations. Apart from working in the industry, they can further study in local and overseas graduate programmes.

Further Studies

Graduates can study MPhil/PhD in Chinese programmes offered by our University. They can also study related programmes at the postgraduate level at local or overseas universities.
